Buying the Best Game For Yourself

Picking out a game for yourself can be a difficult process. With the expenses that come with modern gaming and the vast quantities of games out there problems can arise when trying to find something that you will enjoy for a long time. There is no fool proof method for finding the perfect game, however there are several things you can do to discover something that you are more likely to enjoy.

"To many games"

"To Many Games"

One thing you should remember is that everyone has different preferences. Some people like games that no one would consider worthwhile. So if this doesn't work for you it doesn't mean that you wont like any other games.

What Do You Like?

The first step to choosing a game is finding out what type of game you like. Usually this can be done by buying multiple games and seeing what will draw your attention. But if you don't have a history with video games there are still somethings you can pay attention to.

What are you good at/What are your skills? most games are only enjoyable if you know how to play them. things you could consider are your reaction times, ability to solve puzzles, strategic for site, mathematics abilities. If a game possess these abilities as key skills it might be worth looking into. You can usually find these in a review or in the actual description of the game.

What do you want out of your game? consider what experience you want to have while playing. Do you want a challenge? A heart breaking story? Interesting moral dilemmas? a power trip? compelling thoughtful game play? Good visuals. Check for tags next to the purchase of the game or keep these words in mind when checking reviews.

Do You Support Them

This is minor but I still include it because supporting developers who mistreat their employees or exploit their community is a big mistake that lots of people make. You don't have to go to in depth about this, no FBI investigations. Just search up the name of the development studio to see any recent headlines and see if you respect them.

Check The Trailers

If you find a game with a cool name/artwork/concept its always important to check if they fallowed through. Look at some of the trailers, does the art work look good? How is the music? Can you see where they implemented their game play mechanics. Look at both cinematic trailers (trailers that represent the games ideas and look pretty) and game play trailers (trailers that actually show what happens in game).

What Do People Say?

This is by far the biggest and most important step. Look at reviews, what do people say about:

-Loading times -Character control -The amount of content

-The quality of voice acting

-etc...

There is a vast amount of things that go into a game that can be commented on so make sure you keep in mind what is important to you. If you don't care about the role playing aspect of the next Elder Scrolls game then what should you care about the character customization. A great place for reviews is on Youtube, however its hard to separate professional critics from your average Joe. If you looking for more professional reviews with some authenticity behind them i would personally recommend IGN and GameSpot. Otherwise I would recommend Gameranx, AGC, MandaloreGaming, Gggmanlives, WhatCultureGaming and LGR. Older games are less likely to have online reviews but more likely to have articles written about them.

Just remember that it all comes down to you and no matter the amount of preparation you do something might not click. Or just because other people don't like a game doesn't mean that you wont as well.
